Our Favorite Mental Health Quotes and How to Apply Them

Our favorite mental health quotes and how to interpret and apply them in your life.

Let’s start with a definition of mental health

“A state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.

Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking or behavior. They’re associated with difficulty functioning in everyday situations.

And how many people struggle or are affected by mental illness? Roughly 20% of Americans experience it every year.

I’m interested in normalizing the things we struggle with. Money, sex, relationships and mental health all fall into the category of things everyone will have difficulty with in their lives. The more we can become comfortable talking about them with others, the faster the stigma will be lessened.

We’ve chosen 10 quotes and they come from prominent people from many walks of life. But just because you’re not a famous actor or a professional athlete, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take your mental health seriously. In fact it’s the opposite.

I’m sure there are many people who rely on you and value you. It’s important you recognize how much we all need you to be mindful of your mental health.

We’ve selected 10 mental health quotes focused on these five ideas

  • You’re not alone

  • The value of talking about it

  • There’s no shame in it

  • The struggle isn’t permanent

  • You’re worthy of addressing it

Our first two quotes come from an American actor and an American athlete

“I found that with depression, one of the most important things you can realize is that you’re not alone. You’re not the first to go through it, you’re not gonna be the last to go through it.” -Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

“If we start being honest about our pain, our anger, and our shortcomings instead of pretending they don’t exist, then maybe we’ll leave the world a better place than we found it.” -Russell Wilson

If you’re suffering from mental illness, it’s important to realize you’re not alone. Mental illness can affect everyone, even those people we assume are immune to it.

Recognizing that it’s part of the human experience for people in every walk of life helps us to know we’re not the only one going through it.

Our next two come from an American television host and an American singer-songwriter

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.” -Fred (Mr.) Rogers

“What I love about therapy is that they’ll tell you what your blind spots are. Although that’s uncomfortable and painful, it gives you something to work with.” – Pink

Mr. Rogers is right on, as always. The last thing we should do when facing mental illness is to keep our thoughts and feelings bottled up inside.

Our next two favorites come from an American author and an American actress

“You don’t have to be positive all the time. It’s perfectly okay to feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated, scared and anxious. Having feelings doesn’t make you a negative person. It makes you human.” -Lori Deschene

What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation.” -Glenn Close

Part of the human experience is feeling shame. We can feel shame when we’re in debt, or when we get divorced, or when we struggle with substances. Like those examples, there’s no shame in experiencing mental illness.

While it’s perfectly natural to feel ashamed, being mindful of the times when you’re experiencing that emotion can help you move past it.

Moving on to our next two favorites from an American singer-songwriter and an American naturalist

“If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken.” -Selena Gomez

“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves” -Henry David Thoreau

Here’s a bonus quote from Winston Churchill “when you’re going through hell, keep going.” When we’re in the thick of an awful experience or situation, it feels like it will never end. But it can and it will.

Getting the support and resources you need is essential to overcoming mental illness. Recognizing the process will be difficult, and that you’ll emerge a better version of yourself is important.

Our final two come from an American teacher and the Buddha

“Treating myself like a precious object will make me strong.” -Julia Cameron

“You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” -Buddha

You are someone worthy of the life you want. You’re worthy of the effort and work it will take to overcome mental health challenges.

In many situations, being selfless is an admirable quality. When it comes to taking care of yourself and addressing your mental health, you need to be selfish. You must recognize that you are a person of value worth taking care of.

Takeaways

I hope this has helped you realize mental illness can affect anyone. It’s my hope you’ll become more comfortable talking about your personal mental health experiences and you’ll be accepting when others share theirs with you.

Even if you’re not experiencing stress or burnout, I want to encourage you to prioritize self-care. If you’d like to learn more about it, we have a post on how you can incorporate it into your life.
