The Logical Conclusion to Your Life

Have you thought about the logical conclusion of your current plan and behaviors? I’m talking about your life.

If you keep doing what you’re doing, where will you end up? How will your life look? Most importantly, is it the life you want?

I’m fond of saying the only way to live how you want is to know how you want to live.

Are you living how you want right now? If not, are you on track to do so in the future?

Is what you’re doing, your current behaviors, going to get you what you want?

No one knows what the future holds. But if you could see yours, how would it look?

I’m not asking for what your dream or ideal life looks like; I’m asking how your actual life is going to look like.

For the past 20+ years as a financial advisor, I’ve been helping people ask and answer these important questions. I’m honored to be named to Investopedia’s list of the top 100 financial advisors many years running.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • Your best case scenario

  • The most likely scenario

  • Your conclusion and way forward

Let’s get started.

Best case scenario

How do you know where you’ll end up? Here’s the right question to ask; “If everything I’m currently doing goes perfectly, where will I end up? If you keep doing it the way you’re doing it, what’s the best possible result? As with all big questions, it’s best to break them down into smaller pieces. There are six key areas I encourage you to focus on:

  1. Family
  2. Community
  3. Wellbeing
  4. Career and money
  5. Personal development
  6. Peace of mind

Again, if everything you’re doing goes exactly right, where will you end up? Let’s play it out over the course of the next 20 years.

Ask yourself, “How will my family life look in 20 years?”

Based on your current behaviors and the best possible outcome, will you be married, have a long-term partner, have children, or will you be on your own? Will you have a relationship with your parents, siblings, etc? How strong will your relationships be?

Ask yourself, “How will my community life look in 20 years?”

Based on your current behaviors and the best possible outcome, what communities will you be active in, who will be in your circle of friends, how will you be involved with them?

Ask yourself, “How will my overall wellbeing look in 20 years?”

Based on your current behaviors and the best possible outcome, how physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy will you be?

Ask yourself, “How will my work life and financial situation look in 20 years? Do you want to do that kind of work?”

Based on your current behaviors and the best possible outcome, what will your work situation be, and how will you be doing financially?

Ask yourself, “How will my personal development have evolved 20 years from now?”

Based on your current behaviors and the best possible outcome, how much will you have improved and evolved?

Ask yourself, “How will my peace of mind be in 20 years?”

Based on your current behaviors and the best possible outcome, will you enjoy peace of mind?

What do you think of that? Are those the things you want? Is that the life you want? Do you want to ride it out, keep good going and stay the course? Or are there areas you’re second guessing?

Most likely scenario

Now, not everything is going to work out exactly as you want it. Let’s take it to its logical conclusion. Ask yourself, “What results are my current actions guaranteed to deliver me?”

Let’s play that scenario out over the course of the next 20 years.

Ask yourself, “How will my family life look in 20 years?” Based on my current behaviors, what results am I guaranteed to get?

Ask yourself, “How will my community life look in 20 years?” Based on my current behaviors, what results am I guaranteed to get?

Ask yourself, “How will my overall wellbeing look in 20 years?” Based on my current behaviors, what results am I guaranteed to get?

Ask yourself, “How will my work life and financial situation look in 20 years?” Do you want to do that kind of work?  Based on my current behaviors, what results am I guaranteed to get?

Ask yourself, “How will my personal development have evolved 20 years from now?”  Based on my current behaviors, what results am I guaranteed to get?

Ask yourself, “How will my peace of mind be in 20 years?” Based on my current behaviors, what results am I guaranteed to get?

Your conclusion

Now, ask yourself, “Is that what I want?” I’m not making a judgment- I have no idea what you’re doing or what you want. You need to decide.

Are you on the right path? Is this the right plan? Do you have a plan?

Most of us are just going through the motions, carried along by life’s current. We do what I’ve always done, and get what we’ve always got. Rarely ever checking in to see if it’s what we truly want. If we’re not careful, if you’re not careful, you’ll end up living someone else’s life.
