Our breath is a powerful gift that comes free of charge at birth, with the ability to support our physical and mental well-being.
How? The pace of our breath controls the nerve that determines whether the nervous system is in a state of ‘fight and flight’ or ‘rest and digest’. In other words whether we feel anxious and stressed or calm and peaceful.
THE KEY TO FEELING CALMER IS HOW WE USE OUR BREATH
This means that when we are nervous, angry or stressed our breathing becomes shallow, which puts the whole body into a state of ‘fight and flight’. When this happens our body releases cortisol, the stress hormone.
Wondering why you feel so angry and uptight sometimes? Often these emotions start with feeling stressed, which speeds up our breathing and automatically places our nervous system in ‘fight or flight’.
Wondering why you can’t get a peaceful sleep? Once again it can often be the result of too much cortisol (the stress hormone) in your system brought on by feeling stressed.

Breathing deeply and consciously can take the body from feeling anxious to a state of ‘rest and digest’ in less than a couple of minutes. By restoring the depth and fullness of our breathing we control our nervous system and in doing so, we can reduce our stress levels very quickly.
There are also great long-term benefits to this. We spend more of our time in a calmer state, which enables feelings of mental clarity. And by making us less reactive when things aren’t going the way we would like, we build mental fortitude.

Breathing deeply as a daily practice has given me a great deal of clarity in my life. As I sit quietly, it calms my mind, lowers my heart rate, reduces my stress levels, energises my body and supports my digestion. The even better news is that it can be done anywhere, at any time – whether you are alone or with people.
I have found that the practice of deep breathing connected me to my spirituality and gave me the ability to actively choose to feel peaceful on a day-to-day basis, even in the face of enormous stress.

But we can all make the choice to breathe deeply, consciously and with purpose and when we do, we witness incredible changes physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually that ultimately mean we are able to live a happier and healthier life.
